Vernon Walters, when he was my ambassador in Germany, told a story about an experience he had as interpreter for George Marshall. The two of them were visiting bombed homes in the Frankfurt area late in 1945. Walters said he despaired that these people could ever recover, but Marshall told him they were already well on the way. Walters asked how he could say that. Marshall responded “Didn’t you see the flowers on the tables? No matter what shape the house was in, these people had collected flowers for the table.”
