Vale surpasses Petrobras and is the leader in exports in 2010

By IG Economia

Vale, the largest iron ore in the world in 2010 reached the rank of major Brazilian exporter, beating Petrobras, the leader of this ranking since 2002. According to figures released today by the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) linked to the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), foreign sales totaled Vale's $ 24 billion (FOB), 32% above shipments of U.S. $18.187 billion from Petrobras.

World stocks at new high, euro up on debt hopes

By Jeremy Gaunt, Europe Investment Correspondent (Reuters)
World stocks hit a fresh 28-month high on Tuesday, while the euro climbed on hopes for an easing of the euro zone debt crisis.

Euro zone leaders were attempting to thrash out an agreement on beefing up a rescue plan for indebted countries although no sign of agreement at Monday's meeting. Russia said it may be interested in buying bonds from the rescue fund, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF).

The euro rose more than half a percent to $1.3376.

Investors are keen to see euro zone countries provide more money for the EFSF to ensure that there is enough to cover any contagion into large economies such as Spain.

TRANSPORTE, MULTIMODALIDADE E LOGÍSTICA

By Samir Keedi

One day DHL will learn from FEDEX

By Paulo Camurugi

In my first article on this blog, I made a rant about the treatment that DHL and the IRS gave to me when they retained in Customs business cards that the company I represent in Brazil sent me from the U.S.
What bothered me most was that, besides DHL had only informed me of the delay by email (where they just reported the English expression Clearance Day), they did not tell me the reason why the Customs retained the goods.

By Paulo Camurugi

Europa e Mercosul querem empresas no acordo bilateral

By Karina Nappi / DCI

Uganda shilling pressured, dollar demand strong

By Reuters - KAMPALA

The Uganda shilling remained under pressure against the dollar on Tuesday after touching an all-time low a day earlier, and traders said strong demand for the greenback could weaken the local currency further.

At 0950 GMT, commercial banks in Kampala quoted the shilling at 2,337/47 against the greenback, little changed from Monday's close. Earlier, the shilling had slipped to a bid price of 2,340, just shy of the all-time low of 2,341 hit on Monday.

Commerce Stifles Exports!

By kekepana.com/blog

In a peculiar decision just before Christmas, presumably timed so nobody would notice it, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Foreign Trade Zones Board issued a finding that says that exporters manufacturing in an FTZ cannot use foreign-source products if they are subject to U.S. anti-dumping or countervailing duties.

Foreign Trade Zones serve many purposes, but one is to provide a means for U.S. manufacturers to make goods for export without the cost of paying duties on imported components since they will be leaving the country again.  They do pay duties if the end product is sold in the United States.  A decision to disallow foreign inputs because they must pay additional penalty duties is bizarre.  Goods used for manufacturing within an FTZ or an FTZ subzone do not legally enter the United States so duties applied upon entry should not be applied.

INCOTERMS ® 2010 ARE ALREADY ON COURSE / OS INCOTERMS 2010® JÁ ESTÃO VALENDO

By Paulo Camurugi

Incoterms 2010 ®, launched in September 2010, are already on course since January 1. Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) are terms of international sales and were published in 1936 by the ICC - International Chamber of Commerce, a Paris-based organization that works to promote and assist international trade.

Incoterms are used as pre-established contractual clauses in purchase and sale of fungible goods, where both parties define the division of labor, cost and risk.

Updates are made regularly on Incoterms. The latter were made in 1980, 1990 and 2000. Updates are necessary due to technological developments and changes in global infrastructure, which affect the daily operations of foreign trade. Since the last review in 2000, much has changed in international trade and the current revision took care of issues like the evolution of cargo security and the need to replace paper documents by electronic.
