Antwerp has a high 16% in operating charges

By Guia Marítimo news
The movement of containerized cargo at the Port of Antwerp (Belgium) expanded by 16.1% in 2010 compared to the range of 2009, consolidating the complex as the second largest container port in Europe after Rotterdam (Netherlands).
The Belgian port moved 8.48 million TEUs (a measurement equal to one 20 foot container) in the previous year, compared to 7.2 million TEUs in 2009 and slightly less than the record 8.6 million TEUs achieved in 2008.

The volume of general cargo grew 13% to 178 million metric tons - an amount less than the 189.5 million metric tons recorded in 2008, according to preliminary information.

In turn, the breakbulk sector rose by 6.3% to 11.1 million metric tons in the period.Compared to 16.9 million metric tons disposed in 2008, the difference is 34.4%.

"The breakbulk sector is the one with the greatest difficulty in recovering from recession," said Port Authority of Antwerp. "Cargoes such as steel products, pulp, paper and fruit suffered heavy losses in 2009 and are still struggling to get back on track again." The Authority also said it still remains the main port for this type of charge, "although this position has been under increasing pressure in recent times."
For other goods, the segment ro-ro (roll on-roll-off) increased 14.8% to 3.6 metric tons, but is still far from those of 2008, largely due to lower imports of newautomobiles. The bulk liquids and solids had increased by 12% and 4.8% respectively, up 20.6% in crude oil and 18% in chemicals. Already Coal shipments continued to fall, showing a decline of 16.3% over 2009.
