Vernon Walters, when he was my ambassador in Germany, told a story about an experience he had as interpreter for George Marshall. The two of them were visiting bombed homes in the Frankfurt area late in 1945. Walters said he despaired that these people could ever recover, but Marshall told him they were already well on the way. Walters asked how he could say that. Marshall responded “Didn’t you see the flowers on the tables? No matter what shape the house was in, these people had collected flowers for the table.”
In a similar vein, a business friend has received message yesterday from a partner in Japan. Bears reading.
Dear Partners,
Thank you very much for your encouragement, warm messages. We received thousands messages from all over the world.
Fortunately, our staff didn’t have any damages. At same time, we have 3 warehouses in neighbor prefectures. But we didn’t have big [damage] on products too. Only 9 pcs of products were damaged. This means “no damage on our stocks”.
At same time, because of electricity shortage, trains are restricted. However, some of our staff comes to the office by 2 hours bicycle rides, some of our staff comes to the office taking 4 hours by bus and trains. I really proud our staff to operate the company with their loyalty and sense of responsibility.
From this situation, only sad, terrible news on TV can see in these days. So we will perform bright and warm services to our customers. And wehave electric restriction but with warehouse staff cooperation, we are performing normal delivery as much as possible.
We have heard from our customers that almost all of trading companies are closing the office but [our firm] is becoming almost normal delivery situation. I really appreciate our staff and warehouse people for this fast recovery.
Also we are really encouraged from your helpful suggestions, warm messages from all over the world. We really proud all of you as partners. We do accept your volunteer spirits and deliver the products to stricken area for sure.
From this opportunity, we do want to reinforce our business relationship much tighter than before.
Finally, we do appreciate your government policy to help our country.
